What I’m reading - December 31,2009

Plowing right along with my reading challenge from Booking Mama, I read The Cat Ate My Gymsuit. The main character is Marcy. She is overweight, smart, insecure, from a dysfunctional family, and living in the 70s. She gets a new English teacher that teaches in a less traditional way. The kids love Ms. Finney. The administration does not. They finally see a way to get rid of her when she refuses to say the Pledge of Allegiance.

The kids bond together to try to save her from being fired. It’s a little bit feminism mixed in with maturing with a dash of self esteem. There’s a some allusion to the budding women’s rights movement and the Vietnam War which younger readers may not pick up on, but isn’t necessary to enjoy the story.

Again, some of it seemed a little too simple, but it is a young adult book so I’ll let it slide.

As for books I have checked out from the library, well a lot of my holds came in at one time so I have quite a bit to get through. Plus, there’s a few that I had to renew as I still haven’t had the opportunity to get through them all

Shelf discovery : teen classics we never stopped reading Skurnick, Lizzie.
Summer of my German soldier Greene, Bette
The secret garden Burnett, Frances Hodgson
Harriet, the spy Fitzhugh, Louise.
The grounding of Group 6 Thompson, Julian F.
Janet Evanovich’s how I write : secrets of a bestselling author Evanovich, Janet.
A single eye Dunlap, Susan.
The lost city of Z : a tale of deadly obsession in the Amazon Grann, David.
The Hunger Games Collins, Suzanne.
The girl who played with fire Larsson, Stieg
Hollywood Station : a novel Wambaugh, Joseph.
Guilty pleasures Hamilton, Laurell K.

I love books

One of my Scouts gave me a gift card to Borders for Christmas. So I of course was forced to make a trip there as soon as possible. The Detective’s mother took the day off work and asked if we’d like to drop the kids off for a bit.

BOOYA!

We dumped them all off and headed to Atlanta Bread for a quick lunch then made our way to Borders. They had a ton of books moved to the bargain section so I spent most of my time picking out books I’d never heard of but sounded good from the back. Most of these were $3.99.

Here’s my list:

A Death in the Family by James Agee
Ladies’ Lending Club by Janice Kulyk Keefer
The Italian Secretary by Caleb Carr (I LOVED The Alienist, but hated Killing Time)
The Essential Marcus Aurelius
Brights Lights, Big Ass by Jen Lancaster (CPA highly recommends her)
How to Expand Love by the Dalai Lama
Love is a Mix Tape by Rob Sheffield
The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly
The Complete Book of Running for Women
+ a couple of running magazines and Mental Floss

(Anyone read any of these?)

We also swung by and looked at Dick’s Sporting Goods, then sadly, had to go get the shorties and come home. But not before stopping at the library to pick up some books that came in for me.

Did I mention I love books?

Exchanges and Returns

Posted: December 29, 2009 by Cop's Wife in holidays & celebrations, random

The one thing that drives me nuts about the holiday season is the crowds coupled with the inevitable returns/exchanges. The Detective bought me a pedometer when I really need/want/asked for a pedometer watch so I can see how fast and how far I’ve gone while running.

Return.

My mother-in-law bought Peanut a pair of shoes that are a tad too small.

Exchange.

I bought the Detective a set of 3 Mizzou t-shirts from the kids. We bought large. He wants extra large.

Exchange.

2 of the items I bought somehow made it out of the store with the security tags on them. So now I need to find the receipt to prove I actually bought them and then have the tags taken off.

(Not really a return or exchange. Just a nuisance.)

Nuisance.

Now we are off to make some of these things happen.

Pre-Christmas Excitement

Last week I went to Paradise Park to meet up with a couple of my girlfriends and their kids. We were all off for Christmas break so there were 3 women, 1 daughter, 6 sons, 1 foster baby boy, and 1 indeterminate baby in utero.

I took the boys to the gym to keep working on my 5k training, then picked up Peanut from a sleepover and was only a little late meeting CPA. A short while later, our other friend arrived. The kids played at the water table, did a little face painting, and generally just checked everything out. The adults were able to hang out and chat for about 20 minutes or so before IT happened.

Bubba fell (or was pushed). He came running at me. Now in the 3 seconds it took for him to get to me I thought the following things:
*sigh, he fell. Again. He always falls.
He’s crying really loud.
Where did he get red face paint?
Why is his face paint leaking?
SHIT! HE’S BLEEDING!
ER.
I have all the kids with me. How am I going to get them all in the van and too the ER?

Then he was in front of me. Fortunately my first aid training kicked in, and I immediately applied pressure. It was bleeding. A lot. As in squirting. He was FREAKED out. CPA asked if she should call 911. I said yes. The medics that arrived were Fire Rescue. The Detective’s cousin is a firefighter in that city and I shamelessly name dropped him. Hey, if it meant any slightly better care for my baby, I didn’t care. They determined he’d need stitches right away. Bubba wouldn’t agree to be transported so they carried him out and got him in my van. They also called ahead to the hospital to make sure he’d get seen immediately. They were great.

Peanut on the other hand wasn’t taking it too well. She felt responsible and kept bursting into tears. I wanted to make her feel better, but I had to focus on Bubba. Fortunately my girlfriends were super caring and maternal with her and helped make her feel better.

The Detective met us at the ER. Actually he arrived before we did which is a little scary as he was nowhere near the area when he got the call. Bubba had calmed down some, but was still covered in blood.

So the pictures below are not for the squeamish. It took 8 stitches, 2 on the inside to close him up. No need for an x-ray either as the doc could see through the wound to his skull and that there was no fracture there.

And it really, really sucked.

But the hypochondriac in Bubba secretly loved it. The hydrogen peroxide, the neosporin, the bandages, the pills.

I just hope it never happens again.
