Pics I Love

Posted: January 17, 2010 by Cop's Wife in besties, pics i love

Though this is NOT the most flattering pic of either of us, this is basically what Goldilocks and I look like when we are together. She makes me laugh. And thinks I’m funny which is a bonus. I love spending time with her. I wish we lived closer. Hell, I wish all my friends lived closer. I wish we got together more often. I wish she hadn’t talked me into a 5k. I wish we still worked cube to cube. Ok, not in cubes, but maybe just sat next to each other on a regular basis.

Between the two of us we have 5 kids, 4 of which are under 5. It’s not easy to get together without them and even more difficult to try to plan something with all of them.

Our husbands love each other too, which is another bonus. But we haven’t all 4 gone out in a LONG time. We should do that.

Anyway, I love Goldilocks. And I love that she is my friend. And I love her laugh and her sense of humor and her dedication and her graciousness. I love her kids and their names and that she quit her job to take one closer to home/family that allows her to be with them more even if it pays less. I love that she can laugh at me and at herself and at boots on the side of the road. I love that she hates odd numbers and sits outside her kids’ door at night until they fall asleep. I love that she loves cheesy metal and TSO and ZZ Top. I love that she loves Garozzos and the Pioneer Woman and Rainy Day Books, and Da Vinci, and Origins. And a million other things.

We have decided to schedule a phone call once a week. It’s Wednesdays from 8-9pm. (though she did push me off an hour on our very first call.) We may have to adjust our times. I call them ‘Tuesdays with Morrie.”

What I’m Reading - January 14, 2010

I read ‘A Single Eye’ on a recommendation from an old friend. Well, she recommended the author in general. So I put it on hold at the library. After I picked it up I sent her a message letting her know. She then said that this particular series was ok, but she preferred the earlier books. I’ve since put one of those on hold also, but read this one anyway.

From Publishers Weekly: Anthony-winner Dunlap, author of the Jill Smith mysteries (Sudden Exposure, etc.) and Kiernan O’Shaughnessy series (A Pious Deception, etc.), introduces another brilliant but vulnerable heroine, Darcy Lott, a stuntwoman with a secret. After a stunt goes awry and a young protégé is seriously injured, Darcy, a Buddhist, retreats to Redwood Canyon Monastery, deep in California redwood country, where she delivers a message from her Manhattan roshi, or spiritual teacher, to the camp’s leader, the enigmatic Leo Garson–roshi. Rather than enlightenment, Darcy finds a Zen camp awash in greed, lies and ultimately murder as she investigates Leo’s sudden illness and the disappearance of a young Zen student six years earlier. Dunlap fans are sure to welcome this new addition to her oeuvre, while remaining hopeful they may yet see more of Smith and O’Shaughnessy. (Nov.) I had no idea what it was about when I started reading and found the Buddhist stunt woman a somewhat odd protagonist. But I liked her. I didn’t tear through it like some other books, but I didn’t postpone reading it either. There is a second in the series and if I ever catch up on all my other reading I will read the second one. The author is very good. I love her storytelling and ease with words. I’m anxious to read from another of her series to see if a change in main character gives me a better read.

As for my library books this week:

Guilty pleasures Hamilton, Laurell K
The girl who played with fire Larsson, Stieg
The lost city of Z : a tale of deadly obsession in the Amazon Grann, David
Hollywood Station : a novel Wambaugh, Joseph
Hotel on the corner of bitter and sweet : a novel Ford, Jamie
The last Dickens : a novel Pearl, Matthew
Karma Dunlap, Susan
Gregor the Overlander Collins, Suzanne
I dreamed I married Perry Mason Kandel, Susan
Hardball Paretsky, Sara
Grave secret Harris, Charlaine.

Took a break

After a two week break (GASP!) from my training, I have started back today. I was having a little issue with my knee, plus we have had horrible weather here. Today is actually the first day it has been above freezing since Christmas Eve. And most of those days were below zero. Peanut had 4 snow days off of school. The roads were terrible for a long time. So I took a very extended break from running.

But today, I picked back up where I left off, so I did Week 4 Day 2, which is a 5 minute warm up walk, run 4 minutes, walk 1, repeat the 4/1 4 more times, ending with a 5 minute cool down walk. I did 2.26 miles in 34 minutes. It sucked a little, but I did it without too much trouble. I’ve already prepped Peanut that I may be doing some walking during the 5k and it could possibly take days for me to complete. Hopefully I can get the distance up, and possibly not quite as much walking in time for the Groundhog Run on 1/31. And if you are looking to get rid of some of your hard-earned money, I’d love to have it for Children’s TLC. Click here for more information.

Where did my morning go?

I’ve just spend the better part of 4 hours doing random crap. Canceled the newspaper subscription. Filled out permission slips. Paid homeowners’ association dues. Updated my calendar with the dates for all the games from the 3 soccer teams that Peanut is playing on. Balanced my checkbook. Paid bills. Shredded paper. Went through receipts. Looked for my Groupons. Looked up schedules for the two yoga studios that I bought Groupons for. Started to organize info for about 5 Scout activities coming up over the next few months. Paid up for my MOPS dues. Paid up for preschool. Looked into a preschool program for Slim for next year. Called a magazine that’s messed up our order. Fed the kids (I think). Ordered more Girl Scout cookies for some folks.

And yet I am probably only halfway through the random pile of crap.

I think I’ll take a break. And a nap.

Sweetness

Bubba was waiting for Peanut to come upstairs to have a sleepover. While he waited, I read to him in my bed from a chapter book we’ve been working on. Peanut came in to get him. He leaned in to hug her and said, “You’re the greatest sister there is.” As they were walking out I looked over and Peanut had tears in her eyes. She thought what he said to her was so sweet it brought tears to her eyes.

I have some really great kids.

And I feel very blessed.
