Confused

This one I definitely didn’t understand. Firstly, are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles still around? Are they still a big enough deal to warrant costumes? I’m genuinely asking as I have no idea. None of my shorties was ever into them. Also, a sexy version? Really? Is there a market for a sexy turtle?

I know lots of kids that are into Ninja Turtles. That said, the “sexy” version is silly, but doesn’t really surprise me. Talk about gender bending, they didn’t change the name, so this is the “Drag” version of Leonardo?

  2. Sarah says:

To be clear: I am not anti-TMNT. I was just surprised that a they were still popular enough to warrant the sexualized version of them. Also, I do not hate all sexy costumes. If you want to dress sexy, by all means. I am annoyed that there are sexy costumes for children and that there are very few non-sexy costume choices for adults. I was not able to find a not sexy Snow White costume for adults anywhere local.

  3. Jack@TheJackB says:

Well if I was going to dress as a turtle I’d want to be a sexy turtle because the sexy turtles get all the girls. Heck, that would make one hell of a story to tell my grandchildren one day.

“Kids you should have been there the day that grandpa came out of his shell….”

  4. ScarletRose says:

I personally think it’s cool. You have to be a twenty-something to remember TMNT. Also, why not? I don’t really feel like I’d want to wear a bulked up muscle suit to participate…and generally I’m all about being “sexy” on halloween. I agree with the guy up there who said that Halloween is a good opportunity to experiment. And if you are ok with costumes that play with gender roles, why not costumes that experiment with sexual expression? That being said…I would never allow a daughter of mine to wear this until she was fully aware of the message she was sending and was mature enough to send it. Nor would I consider this costume for a family friendly event…

  5. J.D. Walker says:

Sarah, it’s been (in my opinion) a phenomenon with ANY costume, not just TMNT….they make a “sexy” one to appeal to women who want to dress sexy for Halloween.

As far as the turtles themselves, they’re awesome, but I agree that a sexy turtle is pretty much over the top.

In my taekwondo class, I chose the bo staff as my weapon because my favorite Ninja Turtle is Donatello.

  6. Songbird121 says:

Ninjia turtles are awesome! They are a childhood/adolecence/teenage reference for people in thier late 20′s early 30′s who watched them as when they were uber popular. Given that, this costume is probably designed for women in that age group. The Indication of large being 12-14 fits women’s sizing. (However, I don’t know where this is shelved). Most of the time we think of halloween as a kids’ holiday, but I can assure you. I am in my 30′s now, and my friends and I are still planning and working on our costumes months in advance. Some are sexy some are not. But all are loads of fun.

Given this, I am all for adults being given the option to wear sexy whatever out on Halloween. Dan Savage (a sex advice columnist and the person who started the “It gets better project”) has an interesting perspective. He calls Halloween the straight pride parade. Gay pride parades are about openly expressing and celebrating sexuality and sexual preference. Halloween gives staight adults an opportunity to do so too. No one should feel forced to wear a costume that they are uncomfortable in, but Halloween is a night that people get to try on different personas. And maybe for some that is a sexy persona.

He has several podcasts and articles on the topic. One is linked below. Do note that his language can be rather blunt and he purposefully speaks very plainly, using no cutesy euphamisms for sexual terms, and so the language may make some people uncomfortable. But I think it is a great article. (But Sarah you have free reign to take the link off if you don’t want to have it there.)

You’d be surprised at what they can actually make “sexy”…

(Our personal favorite is Sexy Hulkamania, complete with mustache.)

  8. Teresa says:

If you aren’t planning on wearing it, I wouldn’t worry about it.

  9. Manders says:

I know they came out with a new TMNT cartoon a couple years ago that I refuse to watch. I think this costume is aimed for people around my age who remember watching the cartoon, and movies, during their childhoods.

This is not a TMNT costume. This is more like a stripper’s costume with a dyed Zorro mask and a bonus backpack thing. The TMNT costume is the full body suit with a goofy mask little kids are able to wear and it is awesome.

  10. Erin B says:

There is always a market for a sexy (anything) costume

  11. Christy says:

I saw quite a few tmnt this Halloween. I think that’s one costume that will always have some interest. Now a’s far a’s a sexy version???? Seriously???? I think that’s a bit much. Just my two cents worth

  12. JJ says:

I know it is crazy, but it is true-> At college Halloween parties, women’s costumes of any kind are almost always of the “sexy” variety. This is probably aimed at 20-year-olds, who likely remember the TMNTurtles.

  13. Maria says:

Well they are still around, but I have no idea who this woman is and isn’t it telling that she is so dominantly the main figure and the the turtles, our heroes are only part of the background?

  14. knitmanyarn says:

I suppose if you are a turtle you’d find a use for a sexy turtle but I am sure even turtles would think there is a difference between looking sexy and looking like one is for hire.
