Ode to the Detective

Posted: September 28, 2011 by Sarah in the detective

I know that you all know about the Detective. I mention him pretty regularly. But what do you really know about him?

Here are things I love about my Detective:

  • though I have been sick for almost a month [A MONTH] he has busted his arse to get the kids up and ready for school, fed, dressed, and on their buses
  • he has also busted his arse to get them to and from soccer practices, games, doctor’s appointments, etc while still working several weekends out of town and lots of overtime hours
  • he supports this ragtag family of 5
  • he makes me coffee every day
  • he sleeps on the couch if he thinks it will help me get a better night’s sleep
  • he indulges my very serious book habit
  • his eyes positively light up when he thinks something is funny
  • he loves and respects his kids for all of their differences, whether his daughter wants to go all out in sports or his son wants to wear a Daphne costume or his other son wants to carry a purple backpack
  • that I know more about sports than he does and he’s ok with that
  • though he is a police officer, in real life, confrontation is not his thing
  • he will back me up 100%, but knows I can fight my own battles
  • when I need him to, he helps me fight my battles
  • he sometimes lets me get dibs on the Sunday paper first
  • he has a favorite shirt and hat that make him look very “Fidel Castro”
  • he has no problem drinking something with a silly name and an umbrella
  • his friends and co-workers are as rock solid and supportive of him/us/this blog as I could possibly imagine
  • he can calm me down a bit when I get worked up about something
  • he knows when to not calm me down when I am really worked up about something
  • he is the best dad, hands down
  • he’s hot
  • everyone loves him, except a few criminals probably, but mostly, he is everyone’s friend
  • he can tell one hell of a story
  • he laughs at his own stories before he even gets to the funny parts
  • the absolute craziest stuff happens to him - and it’s all true
  • he locks three doors between himself and others when he needs to use the restroom
  • 5 minutes after I’ve said something, he will say it as if it is his own original thought, and then be genuinely surprised and laugh when he finds out it isn’t
  • he cannot recharge or change music on his ipod
  • he decides to do random chores at random times: ex. yesterday he decided he HAD to fertilize the backyard when he had about 10 minutes to get ready for work so he literally ran amok all over the yard as I watched in amazement
  • he has the best family - I seriously lucked out with the in-laws and have even told him that if we ever divorce, I get his family along with my own
  • he would do anything for me, for the kids, for his family, for my family, for our friends
  • he is really, really good at his job and loves it
  • he is truly dedicated to protecting and serving our fair city and puts his life on the line every single day so that you and I can feel safe
  • he’s like a kid going to DisneyWorld when it comes to fishing trips down to the lake - his dad and brother are the same way, they make lists, start packing early in the week, can’t sleep, must get on the road, it’s adorable
  • he will stop at the store no matter what time he gets off work to pick up whatever we need which is usually creamer for me
  • he cannot match an outfit if his life depended on it
  • he is mine

If you happen to know the Detective and would like to add to this list, please do.

You and the Detective rock. I’m happy that you and your family are in the world - and are making a profound difference by loving and supporting each other. Imagine the world we would have if all parents were able provide the nurturing that you and the Detective so clearly give to your children.

  4. That is so sweet! It is good to see people so in love. Thanks for the warm fuzzies!

He’s a kick a$$ soccer dad! Our conversations make the endless soccer practices so much more tolerable. He’s a keeper!

He sounds so totally like the big tough guy that is a a big ol softie on the inside. Love guys like that. I hope you feel much better and soon, cuz he’s gonna run out of steam eventually.

This is so full of Awesome! You are so blessed to have him, and he is equally blessed to be with a woman who knows her partner. It is so very apparent that you two love each other, and your family, beyond measure.

Thank you for sharing your world with us.
