It really skeeves me out to see young girls dressed scantily with their hair and makeup done; one girl looks at least 15 but then I have to remember she’s probably under 12. And unfortunately, the only thing I can think about is how sexual predators would use this to justify their behavior or thoughts, even. Blech.
People are willing to make money in any way they can. It’s what’s fundamentally wrong with society today. That and the fact that there are people out there stupid enough to waste their money on this trash.
You asked if someone could explain the purpose of this. I can. It’s really shockingly simple. The purpose of this, as with any commercial product, is to make money. If there weren’t people willing to buy these products, no one would make them. The people who buy these products-I’m quite sure-are the same people who put their kindergarteners in beauty contests. (Hence the sexily made up 6-year-old models.) We start teaching little girls from day one, that their primary function in life is to be pretty, more accurately-though no one admits this-to be a sex object. Then we wonder why they wind up becoming anorexic. Beauty pageants are perverse and really shouldn’t exist unless you have them for both genders (and the musclemen contests to see who can use the most steroids don’t count), but if beauty contests exist, it should absolutely be illegal for children to enter them. No one under 18. As long as we have the kind of society that allows children in beauty contests, we will have people who want to buy sexy loungewear for their toddlers to tweens. It’s a very sick world we live in on many levels. This is but one.
I had at least two elderly (innocent female) relatives who would give me fancy underwear for Christmas when I was a little kid. I felt special and happy wearing it. (It wasn’t sexy, either with child’s or adult eyes, but a little more decorated than the ones my mother bought me.)
I abruptly stopped wearing shirts that fit well, when I was 11, because (despite never growing breasts larger than an AA cup) I had trouble with the nipple outline showing. As an adult, spandex alone is enough, but with no soft breast tissue underneath the nipple, it would have taken light padding to make me comfortable wearing a silk shirt, as a pre-teen. Which is not a plug for sexualized children, just that if a girl has breast buds, she may reasonably like swimwear and bras with light padding, even if she does not need a bra for support and has no breasts to speak of.
I was a late bloomer, and small for my age - so at 11, I was going through the changes that are a few years ahead of menarche.
Sick and wrong. This isn’t a “Euro” vs “US” sensibilities issue either. I have a number of European friends who would also find this appalling. The truth of it is, children should be allowed to be children for as long as possible. In the US, we allow very young girls to dress like Brittney Spears and wear high heels. This is equally as wrong. The sexualization of pre-teen girls has to stop.
I am disturbed that a couple of people here cannot see the clear sexualisation of the girls in this ad. The make - up alone is a clear invasion. NO child of that age ought to be made up. I guess as the USA has pageants for children, which is wicked, some have been anaesthetised to what is inappropriate. BTW, the last thing anyone who knows me would say about me is that i am conservative!
It makes me sick to think how many pedos now have a legal webpage to go to and view this crap. There is no reason for this product. There are two reasons women wear lingerie to feel sexy or to make their significant other think they look sexy. What possible reason is there to make this stuff for little girls. Makes me sick.
Two words. Pedophile’s dream. I would love to know what in the hell any parent is thinking when they dress their daughter provocatively. I know it’s underwear, and its likely the only one that will see it is the pre-pubescent friends of the girl, but this is just wrong on every single level I can think of.
(Commenters~~If you don’t agree with me, don’t bother calling me out and trying to convince me otherwise….I will NEVER think this is appropriate.)
Yes, a lot of little girls are developing at younger and younger ages today. But, is it then advantageous to advertise little girls in such sexually suggestive ways? Considering there is scientific research that states that men have a sexual thought about every 52 seconds? Would you mine a mind thinking of your daughter with these thoughts running through his head?
This makes me so sad. I don’t understand why people are in such a rush to make children grow up so fast. It’s no wonder that there seem to be so many more pedophiles out there now. Why do they have to wear make-up, jewelry, and hair teased out to there? They are little girls for goodness sakes! I just don’t understand the direction of our society these days. I am by no means a prude, but seriously!?!?! This is beyond my comprehension!
The thought that children, who have brains that literally are not fully developed in the frontal regions (where decision are made), are being ‘used’ to sell lingerie that is oftentimes used for sexual interactions is not only criminal it is violently an attack against the ‘innocence of children’.
What’s next!
That’s even worse than “Toddlers in Tiaras.” The sexualization of children seems to be everywhere, yet we wonder what sets off pedophiles. Parents need to take a stand against this kind of thing - boycott the companies and deluge them with letters of complaint.
Any time you have ‘lingerie’ and ’4 years old to tweens’ in the same sentence, it’s automatically crossed a line. This is so wrong I didn’t even get beyond looking at the URL to go to see the actual pictures.
The last time I actually viewed anything like that was actual kiddie porn (in the line of duty) and I was so disgusted I couldn’t even have sex with my wife for a week.
This is child exploitation. A paedophiles delight. it is so clearly wrong and has nothing to do with over-sensitivity. It has much to do with INSENSITIVITY for any adult tot THINK that sexualising of children is okay.
I don’t know on this one, I’m kind of on the fence, so just for fun I’m going to play devil’s advocate here. First, some of the pictures just looked like girls in bathing suits, I really didn’t see much wrong there. Admittedly, some of the images could be construed as too “sexualized” but that’s really more of a problem with advertising than an issue of product. I buy underwear for my oldest daughter (she’s 4), and eventually once potty training is complete, will do the same for my youngest. The pink undies with the lace (I think it might have been lace) trimming and the bow was kind of cute. I don’t really think I’d object if one of my girls wanted them. I wouldn’t put them in thongs or anything completely stupid like that, but what’s wrong with pink underwear? When I take my daughter shopping for new clothes (usually twice a year- once before school starts and once in December to prepare for the week long chilly snap we get in Texas), I let her pick out her underwear and I really just don’t get why I’d favor the typical character-covered jobs over these. I wouldn’t buy her a bra with built in cups for heavens’ sake, but really, I just don’t see a big deal. Maybe they need to re-market and call them lounge wear only, not lingerie, then people would calm down.
I agree here. I don’t have a problem with the product - the marketing though? not necessary. we all know what our own children look like in their “chonies”.
and, quite frankly, my girls like the underwear that looks more like mine than the princess and character stuff. they got over that around 3 or 4 … now my 7 year old (the youngest of 3 girls) is bugged because target doesn’t carry bras her size @@
but then again, I’ve never been accused of being conservative, so what do I know?
I don’t think the issue is the product, per se. Although I think there is something perverse about putting a bra on a toddler. I think the real issue is the promotion of it. You don’t take a 5-yr-old and do her up to look like Amy Winehouse! It’s sick. THAT is the “big deal.” What you have to understand is that the advertising of the product is paid for and approved of by the makers of that product. The question is, do you want to support a company that approves of making little girls look like sex objects? If you do, then buy their product. if you don’t, then don’t buy their product.
The only way to really make an impact on these people is to hit them where they live - in the pocket-book. Do not buy anything made by these companies. Spread the word - the dollar is their language - speak to them with silence.
I think the undies are actually ok, it’s the fact that they’re being billed as “loungerie” and photographed the way they are. Little girls don’t need to worry about being sexy, wearing the right underthings, posing seductively, etc. Just let them be kids!! And really, what 6-year-old needs a bra!?
why are people in such a rush to make girls look grown up? The collection itself is not so bad. most of it is tanks and undies. A few bras that dont really seem to belong but since more and more girls have to wear them younger, maybe I can understand. What I DONT AGREE with AT ALL is the way these girls are 1. plastered with make up 2. with hair that is way too grown up 3. dripping in jewelry over their so called “loungerie” and 4. posing inappropriately in some cases.
Stupid. They could just have easily sold this collection with a gap style ad of cute little girls that look like little girls.
so I guess France doesn’t have as strict kiddie porn laws… I mean this isn’t really kiddie porn but it might as well be. This is just WRONG on so many levels. I have to say, it’s bad enough that american media creates this demand for adult oriented clothing for kids, which I see every so often… this is just over the line WRONG. It’s like sexualizing children… this would be considerred kiddie porn in the US i’m pretty sure!!
You’re right Batsheva, I apologize. Like I said, I guess France doesn’t have as strict Kiddie Porn laws, b/c if this was in the US that company would be shut down immediately and the owners charged with child exploitation as well as making kiddie porn

Oh…em…gee. That’s digusting!

YUCK!
Unnecessary!
Dear God, I wish I hadn’t clicked on that link! It’s just disturbing.
Sorry, no, I can’t explain the purpose, other than the most painful, obvious one, which is the sexualization of minors.
This is just wrong.

The underwear itself isn’t inappropriate, but the makeup, hair, and provocative poses sure are. A boycott would be good…

Holy sh*t. WRONG. WRONGWRONGWRONG!!!!
Wow. This reinforces my resolve to dress both my girls in turtleneck caftans until their eighteenth birthdays.

Ditto Gale, Jill and Matt. I will add nothing more because I will be forced to go on a tirade.

my 6 year old (now 12) needed a bra and I thank the stars I was able to find one for her. it took some searching, but it was needed.

Ohsosad! I’m 61, and I remember how much fun it was to be a real little girl.
and then they wonder why these poor kids are getting molested.. that makes me sad.
Um, not going to click through to this link, as it’s probably spam or phishing. At least, I hope it is.
I read it on PBS Parents’ Facebook. It’s legit. And unbelievable.
I can’t seem to access the link, but by reading the URL I can definitively say … yes.
