When we went to New York City for the Today Show, we had very little time to do any sightseeing. Fortunately, my shorties were very excited to be staying in such a nice hotel. We did get a chance to grab a cab and run over to Times Square for an hour or so before our flight back. I love this photo. It isn’t very crisp, or centered, or perfect, but it is of the four people I love most in the world on a trip that we’d never be able to afford, walking around in an amazing city.

I think its a perfect picture.
I can totally understand how you feel! NYC is one of my FAVORITE cities in the world! And I would SO love to take my family there, but, I can’t afford it. So I ‘biggified’ the pic and lived vicariously through you! ;-)
Congratulations on the trip, and happy holidays to you and your family. :)
I’m watching the clip Messina posted, and I love it. Keep it up!
I say: Frame it and keep it for always. ;)
Any credibility for the “I’m not looking for publicity” argument went out the window when you accepted a free trip to New York and a spot on the Today Show. I would have normally been a die-hard supporter of your actions in the previous issue, but I can’t in good faith trust you now with such an attention-seeking response to the whole fiasco. Maybe I’ll blog about my son being gay since he likes pink - I could get a free trip too.
The fact of Boo’s mom being on The Today Show doesn’t discredit her. It’s not like she called them up and ASKED to do an interview. The good that comes out of that is that it further publicized the matter of how we let our kids be unique and teach them to be self-confident. It brought the issue to people who had not seen the original blog post, and that’s a good thing.
I say “Kudos!” to this fabulous mom! Keep up the great work!
How can you post something like that after a post like this? This post is simple and wonderful. It takes joy in a small and wonderful thing and reflects her love for her family.
Obviously anyone writing a blog has no problem putting themselves out there. She didn’t dress up Boo. She just supported him and loved him. I’d rather see her on the news than Lindsay Lohan. She is a great example of what to be.
Lady, you are beautiful both inside and out. Thank you for continue to speak out and educate.
Nothing but love for you, your family and your kickass blog. Keep writing, keep living.
Don’t let the jealous ones get you down. You’re a great mom with a great attitude. Happy Holidays!
Hi Nerdy!
I find this pic very nice and your words very cute.
I saw one of your interviews and i think that you seems like a very positive woman.
Thanks for your blog.
Nerdy, I absolutely love your frankness, positive attitude and all out mommy wonderfulness. I am so glad your family got a trip and you all could benefit from this.
Very cool picture! I don’t know what it is, but there is something so poetic about a pic from behind. You should have it framed. I was also glad someone posted the Today Show link. I’ve written and supported you before on this, but again want to say: Good Job Mom!!!
What a beautiful picture! I’ve always wanted to visit New York City. I saw your interview a few weeks ago and I think you did a great job and I commend you for standing up for your son and for what’s right.
What a wonderful photo! Absolutely PERFECT!
Thanks Messina Studios for posting the Today Show link. What a great clip. Hats off to you Sarah & to Cheryl for standing up for ALL children EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Total teachable moment and being different is A-OK!!!!
Well some good came out of all that foolishness. I cannot wait until your son grows up and understands just how his costume choice changed your family.
Seriously?! I LOVE sharing the earth with you!!!
How wonderful!!!
I agree… it is a great photo.
I disagree- it is perfect!
What a great story on Today! I applaud you and the other mother for appearing on the show and sharing your stories and love and support for you boys. I am the mother of a 5 year-old little boy who I adore. He is in Kindergarten this year and we have encountered this on a smaller scale but I completely support my son’s creativeness and choices. My husband and I don’t believe in letting our culture and society determine what our child does or does not do. My husband is very masculine but does not have a misogynistic bone in his body. We are both very open to our son being an individual and learning to face adversity in life. We just want the best for him, as you do for Boo. Your story made me feel like I was not alone in this journey.
My son wanted to wear necklaces from his neck down to his waist for picture day, we let him. He said they are, “fabulous and I want to wear them for my picture.” I didn’t bat and eye and said, “Okay.” My husband and I smiled at each other in pride that he wants to do his own thing and does not always follow the norm.
I am also a Kindergarten helper and I went to his class that day to help with getting the kids to pictures. When I went into the classroom that day the kids were all marveling my son’s necklaces and giving him thumbs up and he was beaming with joy. His teacher said, “We love (Rock’s) necklaces! He is very proud of them.” I smiled and said, “That’s his thing.”
When it was my sons turn the photographer stopped what she was doing, had a dumb founded look on her face and said to my son’s teacher, “Don’t you want him to take those off??” His teacher looked at me and winked and said, “No… that’s his THING.” And his teacher smiled at me and I smiled back. The photographer looked annoyed and took the picture.
I look at that picture every day and smile with pride about my son. It’s not because he wore necklaces but because he didn’t think it was a big deal to wear something that may be associated with a “girly” type of thing. It’s because we have raised him in an environment that lets him be HIM. He had no idea that this might be considered weird or he might be judged for it, he just thought it was cool and this made him happy. He is 5 years old…let children be who they want to be, they are only young once. If this continues and he wants to do “weird” things in the future, he will have 2 of the biggest fans and supporters, his mom and dad!
Thank God for teachers with a clue!!!
Great pic! A very Happy Holiday to you and your family!
What a great pic!! I love ones like that. Simple, every day things. :)

How cool that you got to go to NY and talk about this. I had no idea this become international! Sheesh! So were you nervous? I know I would be.. :O
That’s awesome! Another good thing to come out of all this! :) Hope you enjoyed. It is one of my FAVORITE cities!
you are inspiring, super-mama. was directed to your blog just after Halloween and have read (and re-read!) many of your posts. i am convinced we would be great friends if i lived in your neck of the woods … would love to exchange emails sometime. as a mom of 3 critters myself, i appreciate your humor and honesty. congrats on living well and true!
I’ve been to NYC more times than I can count, on business trips. Never any time to sight see. This picture is a beaut! A keeper. You are one lucky woman to have those four. Bravo!
I say you blow it up as big as you can, frame it to hang it in a space that you look at every single day, smile and cherish the love it represents!
Do you have a link to the clip? I’m super curious!
